Andy Priaulx scoops Queen's Birthday Honour.



Guernsey racing driver Andy Priaulx is being made an MBE in the Queen's
Birthday Honours. The outstanding contribution made by the Guernseyman
to the field of motorsport has been well documented, culminating in
recent years in winning the FIA World Touring Car Championship three
years in a row. The triple makes him the most successful touring car
driver ever.

Mr
Priaulx started in motorsport in Guernsey at the age of six by getting
involved in motocross. He progressed via powerboating to hillclimbing,
where he quickly made a name for himself. In 1995 he made a maximum
score of one hundred per cent in the MSA British Hillclimb championship.

Over
the next few years, he drove in Formula Renault and Formula Palmer Audi
as well as spending time in Formula 3. He quickly became a driver to
watch and in 2001 he finished second in Korea, beating six reigning
Formula 3 champions.

The next year saw Andy Priaulx's big break
in touring car racing where he spearheaded Honda's return to the
British Touring Car Championship. When BMW were looking for a driver
for the ETCC, he got the call. Thus began an incredible run of wins and
a rewarding partnership with the German car maker.

Despite
winning countless titles and awards, this MBE is a very prestigious
honour, and commenting on it, Andy Priaulx told Channel Online:

"It
is quite a surprise to receive an envelope with the official crest on.
I was really taken aback and very honoured to read they wanted to
bestow the MBE on me. I love my racing and am proud to carry the flags
of both Guernsey and the UK on my car and overalls, so recognition of
this sort is something really special."

He also paid tribute
to all his loyal fans and supporters: "This honour is something I shall
share with my family, whose support has made it possible for me to
concentrate a hundred per cent on my chosen sport. I also want to take
this opportunity to say thank you to all those people who supported and
believed in me from the first time I drove a car in anger. They are too
many to mention and I would hate to leave a single person out, but I am
sure they know who they are."
