What’s your experience of equality in the Islands?

Post by GD on Wed 27 Jan 2010, 7:20 pm

The gap between rich and poor in the Islands is wider now than 40 years ago. How would you close it?

"Deep-seated and systemic differences" remain between men and women and minority groups in pay and employment according to the National Equality Panel report.

It said in areas such as neighbourhood renewal, taxes and education, policy action was needed to limit inequality.

Have you experienced inequality in the Islands?

Do you think the Islands are a meritocratic society?

What do you think could be done to reduce the gap between rich and poor?

Some are more equal than others. The more money you have the better you are treated, which is wrong. The trouble is with the way the world is today, its money first people last.
One way the gap could be reduced is the percentage given for wage rises. The highly paid should get a lower percentage rise than the lower paid, but this will never happen as the highly paid often have a say in wage rises.

the rich should pay a bigger tax percentage thann the normal man in the street .even an extra 10% would help the tax coffers.

Do you think the Islands are a meritocratic society?

That's the biggest laugh of all. I've worked under managers in the finance industry, earning three, four, five times what I was.

They didn't **** about anything. They still don't.

It's impossible to engage in intelligent debate about it. They know best. Without any evidence or earned respect. Unless you count ogling their new car counts.

Idiots.

I was in banking for the last 13 years of my working life and I agree entirely with Fast Robert! One Manager got the sack from Barclays and came to the bank I was working in as Executive Manager!!! how do you work that out - and another came to us with no qualifications at all - unless you count working in Hong Kong a qualification - and immediately became Banking Manager on 50K + bonuses.....I left then and he went on to be one of the 'Managers' in charge of the Lanksbanki fiasco!!!! but made a good pile on the way down....

As long as the wage rises are calculated on a percentage the golf between the have's and the have nots will only grow wider. The lower paid also have to compete with imported labour which makes a fair wage rise impossible.

why does it seem ok to ridicule ones education, upbringing, choice of employment & wealth, but not ones choice of religion.
