Should cigarettes be kept under the counter?
Should cigarettes be kept under the counter? That's the issue being debated by Guernsey's States this week.
It's part of sweeping new measures aimed at putting young people off smoking.
It's also proposed cigarette vending machines should be banned in places where they can be accessed by under 18s.
The States have already agreed shops shouldn't be allowed to advertise cigarettes but if the new proposition goes ahead, it would put them out of sight altogether.
What do you think? Would it be a good idea to ban tobacco products? Or is it going too far?
Do you have any other suggestions?

Once this 'goes through' then they will start on 'obesity' and shops will not be ble to display food and drink (especially sweets and chocolates) and then TV's because if children see one they will want to sit in front of it instead of being out doing sport etc - the list is endless and I would think there is a 'group' somewhere just waiting to start chipping (ooooo sorry - unhealthy word) away at the block that was once our choice to do or not to do!!! I see John Gollop wants VAT on 'unhealthy' food because it makes you fat (he should know) ......when will it end??????

us oldies being treated like children is degrading..being told what we can do or not do, I gave up smoking years ago because i wanted to
not because I was told to..hiding them under the counter is not going
to stop the young ones smoking.

The problem is that youngsters growing up in this nanny state will be totally incapable of making any decisions at all - they will look to the 'law lords' to make life style decisions for them...............(I think that is called a dictatorship!!!).... George Orwell saw it coming - what a visionary and what a waste of foresight!!!!

If you drive it underground then you make it more attractive and then unsavoury elements will creep in and profiteer from this to supply the demand. Fair enough, ban advertising as that has often glamourised smoking and made it 'cool' or 'sexy'.... but leave people to decide for themselves.
