do you think the island is heading for its deepest recession since the
war.if it is what do you think should or could be done to prevent us
feeling the worst effects of it.

I think, and I sincerely hope that recession is too strong a word ! This really is crystal ball gazing as it will be outside influences that have the ultimate say, we are probably more resilient than the leading western market places of the UK and the US, having said that a bad case scenario of international bank failures would impact here even though local institutions would likely remain profitable. A concern of mine is the potential for oil prices to hit $150-$200 a barrel or more. That would put a lot of pressure on UK industrial output and transport which in turn would feed through to us fuelling inflation. Guernsey, as a minor player on the world stage, can do very little to influence this scenario and we would have to ride it out.
Unfortunately the coffers have been raided too many times recently, the "good life" has come to an abrupt halt until we can be more certain of the short term financial future.
What can we do about it ? Nothing at all to prevent worldwide recession. We can be proactive by tightening our belt, no one wants to, especially at this time when we have so many essential capital projects needing attention but with the change in the tax base this area will need monitoring very closely. Most importantly "joined up government" which we have all heard so much about, needs to become a reality and not just a paper exercise.
But lets not look on the gloomy side just yet, we are still in a very favourable position, lets hope we can keep it that way.
Cheers

Would you vote to save St Sampsons & St Andrews Junior schools and the reason for doing so if not why?

I am a logical person with a logical mind...most of the time !...If I was persuaded that by closing these two schools large savings could be made which could be used elsewhere for the further benefit of our childrens education then I would vote for closure. As of now I am not persuaded this is the case, I would need to see a lot more hard facts and figures. I also have a heart (and I'm also a parent), so I wish the respective parents the best of luck in their campaign and, as I say, unless I can be persuaded that we would be able to redirect a substantial amount of money elsewhere ( which I doubt), they have my full support. I think local schools are an intrinsic part of the local community and as such, worth paying what is probably slightly above the average per pupil in running costs.

Paul with the new school coming on line soon do you think the access is
sufficient if not what are your thoughts on this? And what could be
done to make things safer ? do you think gaining access from the rear
of the site (via green lanes) is appropriate ?
Your thoughts?

Digger,
I must be honest here and say I am not very familiar with the proposed layout. It is obviously an area of great concern. Whether anything will be set in stone before the new house takes it's place I don't know. If I am fortunate enough to get a seat and this is still an issue, then it is something I'm sure everyone will want to be fully conversant with. I suspect it will be ongoing for a while yet, so if I do make it in, it will be a definite area for investigation and I'll come back to you. Apologies for the inconclusive reply.
Cheers

Kiwi,
I think you have the wrong PD ! I gather there are actually 3 or 4 people with the same name...easy mistake. Believe it or not I have actually spent 30 mins on the phone to someone fixing their computer whilst the PD they should have been speaking to has been selling my flowers
All the best,

Well, it's all in the hands of the voters now. Whatever the outcome I would say it has been an enjoyable and enlightening experience.
86 hopefuls on tenterhooks, 45 will be winners and the remainder runners up. I would like to congratulate ALL for standing in something they believe in, the future of Guernsey.
Best of luck to everyone, it has been a pleasure going through this experience. Here's too a prosperous and stable future.
Cheers,
