I went to school with Matthew - he would make an excellent states member in my opinion. I hope he gets in

hmm, i dunno anymore, whilst i applaud a youngish person standing, i am not sure.
I've read his posts on WG and often get bored, they're full of spin. I've heard it all before, it changes once they secure their seat. Doesn't inspire me, not for me to be voting for him though as it isn't my parish.

SB, if nobody 'spun' in an election, what a boring process it would be. Its about weeding out the wannabes and willbes. Again i applaud the young man for standing, along with Lee in th same parish. 2 young people isnt a bad thing. I think we need to give some young blood a go at running the island. They may do a poor job, they may do a fantastic job, whos to say? If nobody puts faith in them for putting their backsides on the line and trying to do something positive, then i guess we'll never know! Good luck to all candidates. Got a fair idea who i'm gunna cross the box for. (btw im in SPP North)

Re: Fallaize. Matthew
not an election yet as not enough for the seats
if this carriews on there will not be an election they will walk into the seats
can we vote for a canidete even if they are not in our parish?
Like we were doing an island wide election

Having only just found this forum, I have registered so that I am able to respond to any questions asked of me by posters during the election campaign.
I will try to log on each day when time allows to keep up to date with the debate.
Thanks for providing candidates with another forum to engage with our electorate.
Good luck with the election coverage Vue des Isles.

Would you vote to save St Sampsons & St Andrews Junior schools and the reason for doing so if not why?

Re: Fallaize. Matthew
Hi GD,
My personal prediction is that the next Education Department will resolve not to propose the closure of any primary schools for the foreseeable future, partly because of the well-organised and rational campaigns launched against the closures by the parents at St Andrew's and St Sampson's.
My manifesto gives a very clear undertaking that, based on the exceptionally poor arguments for closing schools put forward thus far by Education, I would without hesitation vote against the closures.
I don't think any candidate can give a cast-iron guarantee never ever to support the closure/merging of schools because policy-makers have to be flexible to changes in the economy, demographics etc.
But if I am fortunate enough to be elected, I will fight as hard as any deputy not to close St Andrew's and St Sampson's in the next four-year term.
I wait with interest for Education to present its vision for nursery education, which we are led to believe should happen within the next 12 months. I do wonder whether the schools under threat of closure could be used as 'community centres' around which to base universal nursery education in Guernsey.
Thanks
Matt

The grapevine has it that the St Sampson infant school will be demolish making way for the car parking to feed the old St Sampsons secondary school, as it is hoped it will become the next piece of departments building to come under the COFE..how true is this ?

Re: Fallaize. Matthew
Sorry Kat - being as much on the outside as you are (for now!!), I cannot possbly know whether this is true.
If it is, my initial reaction to the idea of flattening a perfectly successful school to make way for car parking is one of incredulity, though not shock given the unflattering record of this Education Department.
If I get in, I shall keep an eye out for any of this, and I'll remember that I heard it here first!

it has had money spent on it[and needs a bit more now] but this is still standing strong ..these old buildings have stood the time and are still in better nick then the newer ones tha tare now going to be demolished /these old building were built to last and they have served and still serve the Guernsey community well

Re: Fallaize. Matthew
Matthew i have asked Dave the same question "with the new school coming on line soon do you think the access is
sufficient if not what are your thoughts on this? And what could be
done to make things safer ? do you think gaining access from the rear
of the site (via green lanes) is appropriate ?"
Your thoughts.

Re: Fallaize. Matthew
Hi Digger
The arrangements for accessing the new school site can be described only as one almightly mess-up.
The safety of children, pedestrians and residents could be compromised by the proposed arrangements, and I am dismayed that no senior politician has been able to take control of this nonsense and resolve it long before now.
More robust traffic-calming measures and proper pavements are obviously required, and it would be appropriate to do everything possible to create a decent way in from behind the school for kids.
I'm wondering whether I should declare a very marginal interest.
My mum and uncle own a fairly small parcel of land behind the school; actually well behind and backing onto the old Equestrian Centre, so I really don't think any possible track to the school would run through their land.
Just thought I'd mention it in case someone brings it up at a later date.
