Consumer rights are needed, say shoppers

Post by GD on Thu 04 Dec 2014, 6:55 pm

GUERNSEY must move in line with other countries by introducing overdue consumer rights to protect islanders from any future unscrupulous traders, shoppers warned yesterday.
Many in Town reacted with ‘shock’ and ‘surprise’ that the island did not have any legislation to support consumers, more than 14 years after action was agreed by the States.
However, all of those who were approached by the Guernsey Press defended island retailers for their overall positive attitude and approach to complaints and returns, giving them no reason to seek further support.
Chamber of Commerce president Tony Rowbotham said it had not sensed difficulties in the retail sector that new legislation would address.
However, Guernsey’s Citizens Advice Bureau, which has called for the legislation for more than 20 years, said last year it dealt with more than 1,000 consumer-related enquiries.
