Will Alderney splash out for a pool?

Post by GD on Fri 01 Mar 2013, 11:33 pm

Trustee Rosemary James is a veteran of 18 years of campaigning for a pool - and she says this latest push will be her last.

She said, "The old need a pool, children need a pool - people say well go in the sea but even in the summer, the sea is freezing.

"When we last put the proposal before the States they turned us down - they said there was ‘no appetite’ for it - but this petition will hopefully show them that actually, there is an appetite for it."

There is even support from outside of the island. Olympic swimmer Duncan Goodhew is a regular visitor to Alderney and says young islanders need something to do.

He says, "Swimming is a life skill that everybody should be able to do, particularly on an island. And an island also has a bigger problem; it has the problem of access for anything for young people.

"So on Alderney I feel that it's really important to get an indoor swimming pool sorted out as soon as possible."

They will collate their petition results at the end of March.

And will go back to the States later this spring.

......THE BOSS......

"Always be yourself because the people who mind don't matter, and the people who matter don't mind"
