Calls for city status

Post by GD on Fri 01 Mar 2013, 7:18 pm

There's been a push for St. Helier to become a city. It's claimed it would enhance Jersey's profile and bring new business to the island.

The big city, urban landscapes, crime and congestion are the thoughts likely to spring to mind when you think of places like Birmingham, Liverpool and Leeds. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Take St. David's in Wales. Small, inviting and thriving.

Also in Wales, tiny St. Asaph which became a city to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Now, some in St. Helier believe it's Jersey's turn to reap the benefits that come with city status.

It would cost the States of Jersey 10,000 to bid for the town to upgrade to a city and then it could only happen with approval from the Queen.

But if it could happen for Preston, Wolverhampton and Stoke-on-Trent, then why not
