Planners are 'stifling' our industry

Builders in Jersey have condemned the latest increase in the cost of planning applications.

The Jersey Construction Council say the 2.5% rise will further stifle the industry.

Council vice-chairman Phil James said the decision had been taken without any reference to the impact it could have on construction projects getting off the drawing board.

"2.5% may seem a small increase but when placed in the context of a multi-million pound project, the sum will have a significant influence on whether it happens. That means another constraint on employment," he said.

Mr James warned the increase would have a significant impact, and he has criticised the planning department for not keeping their costs down.

Planning application fees are four times more expensive in Jersey than in Guernsey and the UK.
