Deputies Want Their Pay Frozen

Post by Thistle on Fri 17 Aug 2012, 8:06 am

States members are asking to have their pay frozen for the duration of their four years in power.

A number of them have signed a requette to that effect, saying they want
to lead by example.

Before the election, the last States agreed to freeze pay but allow
annual reviews and adjustment based on the island's median earnings.

The Treasury and Resources Department said then, that it could result in
above inflation increases for States members - and now a number of
Deputies, including new member and T&R Minister Gavin St Pier - are
asking for that clause to be struck from the record.

They say that in a time of fiscal restraint and uncertain economic
environments, States Members should lead by example.

Will be an interesting debate.remember some deputies also need to earn a good wage to pay their mortgage.
And some have families to support and would have given up a well paid job to become a deputy .
do we want a full time deputy or a part time one that has to find extra work to up their income to be able to pay for all their needs .
this will be the argument .
some new ones we now have are younger and have family commitments they will need a good income .
gone are the days when it was only the rich retired business folks who went into the states .these worked for nothing ,but SOME sent a lot of work to their business to help compensate the none payments .
Will be a good debate .

It would be great if the whole Island could follow in rejecting a wage rise for the next four years, but there are families here struggling to keep their heads above water having wage freezes imposed on them for the last two - four years.
nice thought but let's be realistic, just because some can take a pay freeze, they cannot expect all others to follow.
