Patrols aim to get more dog owners picking up the mess

Post by GD on Fri 20 Apr 2012, 5:53 pm

REMINDING dog owners to pick up their pet’s mess has been the focus of patrols by Environment Department officers.

Environment services officer Kevin Lesbirel said four officers from the department had been going to coastal areas over the past month and had spoken to dog walkers.

‘There are a few signs up and we have had a few complaints about the litter. One person said they were surprised by the amount of waste,’ he said.

‘Officers have spent time walking the areas and many people do pick up their litter. It is just a minority – those one or two people who don’t.’

I used to be more incensed by the people who would pick it up in a bag and then lob the bag into the bushes!!! I must say having always had dogs (usually two at a time) I wonder how we managed to get this far with non biodegradable poo bags - in years to come excavations will uncover a multitude of plastic bags with knotted tops - what will they make of that???? seems a bit daft IMO picking up degradable poo and placing it in a non degradable bag - here in Victoria every walkway has a bag dispenser (all biodegradable) so there is absolutely no excuse!!!! But having said that - it is not a real issue here - there are more pressing matters to occupy councils
than dog poo (some might argue that what they discuss is on a par though lol!

I agree .good to see babys nappy sacks are biodegradable now .but would like washables nappies to be used by all.
make me wonder how they picked up the dogs poop years ago when there was no little plastic bags to put it in.

I don;t think they did! I remember being treated to one of life's lessons when I was young, which was if you tread in it through inattention you sit outside and clean your shoes before you came into the house Wink then told to be more careful in future!!!
