Sporting boost for Alderney

Post by GD on Fri 30 Mar 2012, 5:31 pm

A major new sporting event in Alderney is being hailed as a vital boost to the island's fragile economy.

Next month sees the very first Island Rock motorbike trials.

And with up to five hundred competitors and spectators flocking there for it, that could mean upwards of a quarter of a million pounds being spent in local hotels, shops and restaurants.

Jo Parmentier from the States of Alderney said: "Tourism is very important to Alderney especially in this current climate.
"It helps the local economy, all the restaurants and businesses, which is great for the island and it brings a general boost.
"With this event in particular it's great because it's in the shoulder months so it's really kick starting the diary of events for 2012."

More than a hundred bikers from across the British Isles will take on the Island Rock Trials, but when you add in the number of people coming along to watch it all, the population could swell by some 25 per cent.

Co-organiser Bill Hiscock said: "Enthusiasm is contagious and it's spread around the island. And as well as the 102 competitors there are probably 250 to 300 spectators coming from off the island, which helps the economy of the whole island."

And it is also a chance to show off Alderney's beauty, with trials taking in every corner of the island.

Organiser Alan Smart said: "With natural terrain like this, it's an absolutely wonderful place to have something like this.
"We've got 15 sites around the island for the trials event, from sections like this to woods, and the old fort and bunkers, and bits and pieces like that.

"If the Isle of Man experience is anything to go by, staging this event could add more than a quarter of a million pounds to the local economy.
"A tiny amount in global terms - a huge boost for Alderney."
