Having served as a Deputy for eighteen years, if elected I will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the new Assembly.

I have served on numerous committees including, Water Board, Agriculture and Countryside Board, Public Thoroughfares, Tourism and the IDC. I am a member of the Environment Department and the Energy Policy Group.

I believe four main issues will require the attention of the new States. Education, Environment, Economy and Health. Our population is a key issue that will impact on all that we do.

Education – It is unacceptable that children still leave education without basic numeracy and literacy skills. Their employment potential is much reduced as a result. Disruptive behaviour in schools is detrimental to learning for other students and must be eradicated. Funds need to be re-directed to improve the performance of all students.

Environment – We have a responsibility to maintain and promote a better environment now, and for the future.

Several issues will demand attention. Climate change, coastal erosion, a traffic strategy, energy use and future planning. A review of the Urban and Rural Area Plans is underway. The new Plan(s) will guide development for the next ten years. My priority would be to ensure that our countryside, natural and built heritage, are preserved and protected.

Economy – We urgently need to decide on a new corporate tax strategy. Guernsey must attract the right sort of business, to diversify our economy. Banks must be prepared to lend to smaller local firms to help them grow into big business.

I support local enterprise. Buy local! Support our farmers, fishermen and growers.

I do not support commercialisation of Guernsey Water, harbours or airport. Government must never lose control of the provision of vital services.

Health – Healthcare and social needs of our ageing population must have sufficient funding to ensure that the elderly stay fit, healthy, active and independent.

Many people living here fall into the “poverty trap”, struggling to survive despite our affluent society. Government must allocate funds to where they are most needed.
