I would disagree with his 2nd point slightly. In previous recessions, wise governments have spent on capital projects that employ locals, such as Le Val des Terres.

I wonder how many candidates will stick their heads over the parapet when it comes to the CofE rip-offs?

Candidates Can Announce From Today

Guernsey gets into election mode from today.

From this morning candidates can formally put their names down to stand
as Deputy.

While most of the current Deputies will be restanding next month, many
senior politicians including 5 of the 10 Ministers are quitting.

A number of well known islanders have already confirmed to us they'll be
standing and it seems some younger people have taken the call to stand
to heart with at least one candidate in his very early thirties.

Whoever is on the final list of candidates, you get to vote who you want
into the States on the 18th April.

sadly we dont get to vote for who we want to get into the states..that wont happen while we have election district voting ..we need island wide voting to make sure every voting islander can choose from all the candidates standing x

I agree with thistle - it is high time we had island wide voting - I believe most islanders would want this well and it would be interesting to see if this is brought in whether it would encourage more to vote.

Re: Elections 2012

Post by GD on Mon 19 Mar 2012, 5:01 pm

Guernsey politician has said the lack of female candidates for the 2012 general election is "disappointing".

Deputy Carol Steere, who is not standing for re-election, said: "At least 50% of the candidates should be female, in my opinion."

The former education minister said: "I do wish that there were more female candidates so we could see greater female representation in the assembly."

Out of 78 candidates for the 2012 election, 12 are women.

Deputy Steere said: "It's one of those difficulties - how do you encourage women to stand and to get them to put themselves forward?

"I do think that women bring a great deal to the assembly and to politics generally."

'Low-key election'

Adrian Lee, a politics expert and Channel Islands observer, said: "The number of women on the list is now fewer than in previous years.

"In 2004 there were 14, 2008 there were 15, now there are only 12."

He also said a lower than expected figure on electoral roll registration and a reduction in the number of candidates suggested a lack of an issue big enough to motivate people.

He said: "This is shaping up to be perhaps a rather low-key election... at least that's how it looks at the moment."

The 2012 election takes place on 18 April when 45 deputies will be elected to the States of Guernsey.

I am sure that there are some candidates that are female and I am sure that some will be successful in getting in - personally I am pleased that Carol Steere will not be one of them! Shocked

Where are Guernsey's Women?

Post by Sandra James on Mon 19 Mar 2012, 9:44 pm

I received an email today inviting me to join this Forum, I guess because I am a candidate for the Castel? So have no idea whether there are any particular social. political or religious leanings from the majority of posters? So I may be treading in unchartered waters Question

I would however like to say how very disappointing so few women are standing? Why are we failing to attract a broader representation in the make up of our Government?

affraid

Welcome to the Forum Sandra,

I have to agree with you that is is disappointing that so few woman are standing and also there seems to be a lack of young candidates,

What can be done to improve the representation, I don't think there is an easy solution, but those who gets into this new government must gain the confidence of the Guernsey public and show that they can make assertive decisions and not keep back pedalling,

Also the new States members must show that the are they are not just puppets for the Civil Servants and that they do have a say in running of the various departments of the States..

Thats my view .... karaoke1

Will any of the candidates have the coujons to take on the C of E over the way that they rip us off by getting free churches, free maintenance, free accommodation for the staff, etc. We even pay someone to do the cleaning.
