Business confidence has crashed

Post by GD on Fri 24 Feb 2012, 4:57 pm

In a survey, 97% of bosses in Alderney say they have little confidence for the island's economic prospects for the the next two to four years.

In all 50 companies responded to the Chamber of Commerce questionnaire and more than half said they were less confident about 2012 than they were about 2011 - a third actually said they were far less confident.

The biggest worry for bosses is the island's vulnerability to external transport links and the lack of competition. Those concerns were closely followed by worries over the rising cost of rent and labour.

Since the survey Aurigny has confirmed that its services from Alderney to Guernsey and Southampton are two of its lifeline routes.

States member Matt Birmingham says the feeling of economic woe is not confined to Alderney, but admits the island lacks economic diversification despite efforts by the States to attract new businesses.
