Traders call for MoT tests for Guernsey vehicles

Post by GD on Wed 08 Feb 2012, 5:00 pm

The chairman of the Guernsey Motor Traders' Association has called for MoT tests to be introduced to the island.

Iain Carse said he feared the current lack of vehicle testing could lead to deaths caused by unroadworthy Guernsey vehicles, both locally and abroad.

He said the States of Guernsey seemed to believe there was no evidence that MoT tests led to a decrease in the number of road accidents.

Guernsey's Environment Department has not yet commented on the issue.

Earlier in the week Jersey's government confirmed that compulsory MoT tests were to be brought in in the future.

Mr Carse said he felt that pressure from the UK could see the measures introduced locally.

He added that there were a number of unsafe vehicles in Guernsey that he felt should not be allowed on the island's roads.

Vehicle tests such as MoTs are not currently required by law in Guernsey.

Motor Traders have been asking this for years...Cant see happening...

This has been said many times before when this topic has arisen, but I'll ask it again. How many road deaths in Guernsey have been caused by vehicle defects? From an island road safety perspective, I'd be more worried about the ability and responsibility of some drivers.
I do agree, however, that it's a good idea to have a MOT test (even voluntarily) before taking a vehicle on to motorways etc. I once brought a car to the UK which, when MOTd as part of re-registration, showed excessive wear to the steering. No big deal at 35mph, but at 80 on a motorway....

Trying to sell cars is he , if this did happen i would not buy a car here no way stuff them i would get it from the mainland or a car sale on line like piston heads. As Deebay has said i agree that if you are going away have it checked i always do . but not at the Jackson's group " NEVER"
