Sark doctor announces resignation despite petitions

Post by GD on Wed 01 Feb 2012, 6:16 pm

The decision taken by Sark's doctor to resign and leave the island has been met with shock by its community.

Dr Peter Counsell has been the only GP in Sark for almost four years, and petitions asking him to stay had been placed in shops and the island hall.

Diane Baker, chairwoman of Sark's Medical Committee, said she was shocked at the doctor's decision, which follows criticism by an island newsletter.

Dr Counsell declined to comment on his departure, which is due to be in July.

Last week's edition of the Sark Newsletter accused the doctor of neglect for failing to use neighbouring Brecqhou island's helicopter for medical evacuations.

This was strongly denied by Sark's Medical Committee, which pledged full support for Dr Counsell.

Ms Baker said: "I think he's been such a good doctor, he's good for all ages.

"I really didn't think that he would've gone."

I'm no expert but I suspect that a stroke victim would not be able to travel by air. Strokes are mainly caused by high blood pressure, which I would think would be made worse by flying, unless the aircraft is pressurised, which I doubt a helicopter is.

There is nothing in there that is even remotely an excuse for upsetting your only doctor.

it is the word of one person against another in this debacle kingcole ...as for mr delaney upsetting his doctor he couldnt give a toss as his employers pay for private healthcare and he would be flown to guernsey in the helicopter..

Thistle you are incorrect there he may have private medical care but if the sark DR says no helicopter they are not allowed to land without permission in fact they are not allowed to land in sark full stop , that is what all the toy out of the pram is , as for your link re the rescue helicopter that is fine but remember the Barclay's helicopter is fitted out to VIP standard ie leather seats , bar etc not as a rescue copter but having said that it would be quicker but not equipped with drips de-fibs etc IMO if it were me and i needed that sort of care i would probably opt for the flying Christine who knows .

IMO re the sark news letter its about time they grew up .
