They may be famous for living on Wimbledon Common, but the Wombles are set to get a new home from home in Alderney, just like their creator.

Family members of Elisabeth Beresford, who wrote her first Wombles book in 1968, have given the go-ahead for a museum in the island.

The family still owns Elisabeth's home in St Anne's main street, which could be turned into a permanent residence for an exhibition on the famous children's characters, which were turned into a hugely popular television series in 1973, making Uncle Bulgaria, Orinoco and Madame Cholet household names.

Elisabeth was inspired to create the Wombles after a Boxing Day walk on Wimbledon Common when her daughter mispronounced the area as 'Wombledon'. (from CTV)
