Guernsey Minister booed at tourism conference

Post by GD on Thu 17 Nov 2011, 5:09 pm

A Government Minister has been booed by an audience of Guernsey's tourism figures for saying there are too many Eastern Europeans working in the industry.

Commerce and Employment Minister Deputy Carla McNulty-Bauer is calling on hoteliers and restauranteurs to employ more local people so visitors get a more authentic experience.

She was addressing an audience at the St Pierre Park Hotel. She had just read a Daily Mail travel article which mentioned how many foreign accents you hear in Guernsey - though the article wrote about that as a positive, not a negative.

Deputy McNulty-Bauer told a stunned gathering that the industry should ensure most of their staff were as local as possible as visiting journalists had commented about the number of foreigners in the island.

When asked about her comments, she told us: "When people visit a particular jurisdiction, what makes Guernsey so special is Guernsey's uniqueness and its flavour, its culture and its lifestyle as well. Certainly when I visit a location, when I'm talking and being met and greeted by local people, that helps to make my visit even more enjoyable. I think the more local people we can have working in our visitor economy the better."

She linked her comments to imminent job losses in the filfilment industry following the end of Low Value Consignment Relief - the so-called VAT loophole. But it has left those who have come from Eastern Europe shocked.

Lilita Kruze from the Guernsey Latvian Association said: "You have to appreciate people come here, they are working really, really hard. They are giving their hearts into every job and they do improve themselves as well, learning a trade and language, and giving back to island community, to everybody."

But does Deputy McNulty-Bauer have a point? Does the industry employ too many foreigners?

Simon Vermuelen, from the Grande Mare Hotel, told us: "I'm just back from London and at my five star hotel there wasn't any Cockney saying 'cor blimey guv'nor would you like a cup of tea', it was all foreign staff working in that hotel. We are a very small island and historically for hundreds of years, whether it was the apple pickers that used to come over from France, we've always been a transient workforce coming through and going out through the island. It's a fact of life and politicians can't really stop that."

The newspaper article which prompted it all was written by the actress Rula Lenska. In it she waxes lyrical about the island, and said Eastern European accents were nice as it meant she got to speak in Polish.

Do you mean that she is not part of the 16th century McNulty-Bauer family from Torteval? Shocked

She said what we all think. sometime when i go out i would think i am in another country.
you have to try and make them understand what you want.
make those on dole queue get off their ass and work .
I would have love to be able to do some of these jobs years ago in green houses near me . but the foreign workers had priority because they did not have any family commitments .
Carla is a Guernsey girl so i was told but has Scottish descendants ,

I am not a supporter of Mc naughty but she said what a lot think , the problem is that locals won't do the jobs , i say get the little s**ts that sign every week with their designer jeans and tops arriving in their modded cars or by taxi that they have to take the job that is offered to them no excuses , if they come back saying that they have been sacked then no more benefits simple. Don't mummy cuddle them .

Because she used a word that is accepted .Had she called them by thier slang name it would be different .
but she is correct we dont need all these here i see gangs of them that live at the back of La Vrangue Manor house . these do many jobs . in the hotel industry, flower and even go up to HMV to work
they are hard workers but their pay is sent off island to their homeland
yopu cannot blame them for that
i blame the states for allowing many youngster who leave school not having work
i went into the flower and fruit places before i left school to have money.
it was never given to me from the states .
let them earn their keep
there is just so many where i live that are not working cos they have something wrong with them.yet some go down the recycle yard every day and bring it home and sell it on ,they are earning a fortune
this is well know the states know as the gardens are full off the stuff.
yet they let it carry on
some go out every day and spend the money from the states in a pub . they never work at all.
it is these that can go back to work
there are many young mums here . lots do go out to work and work hard to keep their children
yet other pop out another child as soon as one gets to certain age
I say dont give them any childs allowance after 3 children.
the children see this as a normal way of life .they learn from their parents . it wall continue to carry on into the next generations unless we make a stand now and get those who are fit to work back to work.
End of rant

My late (Italian) husband and the father of my children was always referred to as a WOP by my fellow Guerns I found this quite offensive as to me he was a lovely and loving man who forged a career in Guernsey He always called Guernsey his home, died and was buried here... every body belongs to the 'human' race... I am not religious, but I think if you are surely everybody is equal in your God's eyes ...... Rant

I have no problem with guest workers ,but the problem is locals sit back and get money for nothing .these workers work harder than most
some do more than one job.
I have worked with many over the years in the green house industry .
and always enjoyed the summer months when they came into he island to work .

thats just it kat instead of making these lazy little beggars go out to work the states find it easier to issue 9 month licences...i have seen these lazy little good for nothings outside the dole office waiting for money to go and spend it on booze and whatever else they waste it on..surely they should be made to take whatever work is out there..employers should be made to take them on and if they lose the job they dont get any benefits whatsoever..of course we know it wont happen with our mamby pamby government..lets hope we get a better lot in 2012 x

Big Problem - having seen these so called work dodgers queuing for their hand outs would you realy, hand on heart, want or trust any of them to work for you and do a good job.....as the saying goes, you can take a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink affraid and it could end up by where the SS tell you you HAVE to employ them affraid affraid be careful what you wish for lol!

I agree .i know a lad who is a lazy twat .but has never worked .. and there are many like him .
until this government bring back the times they had to do work they will keep being lazy twats.
when i see how bloody hard these guest workers work it is no wonder the employer will choose them first .
like Karma has said who wants to pay a lazy twat

I would never swear in front of any of my elders .i rarely swear ,and the twat word was one i did use on occasion until i saw what it meant
so i will refrain from this one as well and just swear using the word PAnts instead.
