Battle for "temporary" homes

The battle to save a settlement of 19 caravans and chalets in Ouaisne is heating up.

There have been more than 500 objections to plans to build houses on the site, where for over 80 years islanders have lived.

But the landlord says the community do not have the right to live there permanently.

John Wakeham has called this his home for the past 50 years.

He's devastated to be facing eviction.

He said: "Everyone has the right to make their living and their money as best they can, but when money becomes more important than people's lives, which this is what it amounts to here, we have the feeling we don't count for anything, we're just being steamrollered over.

"It's my life, you know. Because I was a child before the war I was evacuated during the war, so I was driven out once by the Germans and I don't fancy being driven out by developers."

The landlord's agent has plans to demolish the chalets and build eight small cottages.

Part of the land would be given up for green space, to preserve the natural habitat.

But this means the current residents have to go.

Simon Buckley, Buckley & Co, said: "It's unfortuante if ultimately they are asked to vacate the site that they have spent their money in that way.

"They have done so in the knowledge that they don't own the land on which the structures sit. From a planning perspective they are temporary structures and can be relocated and they're entitled to take them with them and if planning was granted we'd make suitable arrangements with them."

The planning department has received over 500 objections.

But the landlord has dismissed them, saying those who signed this standard letter, may not fully have understood the proposals for the site.
