Alderney sports centre project to be completed by 2013

Alderney's new 2.2m sports centre is to be completed by the spring of 2013.

The Alderney Community and Sports Centre charitable trust has contracted UK firm Directline Structures to build the multi-purpose venue at York Hill.

Duncan Murray, the company's managing director, said: "The work on the centre will begin after the winter in March 2012 and take a year to complete."

Richard Willmott, the trust's chairman, said he was confident the company could "deliver a much-needed facility".

He said the centre would "play an important part in improving the health and well-being of the island's residents".

The 21,000 sq ft (1,951 sq m) centre will feature a swimming pool, a sports hall and a gym as well as a bowling alley and a cafe.

Mr Willmott said the trust anticipated having all the funding in place by the time construction was due to start.

A sports complex at the York Hill site was first suggested in 2003, but the original budget of 200,000 was later deemed unrealistic.

Mr Murray said: "We will work with local suppliers wherever possible, in addition to bringing in specialist staff when necessary."
