Islanders could go to the polls on Saturday

A series of radical reforms to Guernsey's general election are being suggested.

Ideas including doing away with a polling day in favour of complete postal voting, opening polling booths in supermarkets, and moving the election from a Wednesday to a Saturday.

Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher of St Peter Port South said, "You don't have to vote by post, you don't have to give a reason, so you don't have to go to a polling station, you don't have to vote at the times predicted. And you have in fact a number of weeks in which to vote. In fact, you could do away with polling stations completely if everybody was sent a postal ballot and exercised their vote that way."

At the moment, you have to cast your vote at the polling station nearest your home.

Deputy John Gollop, the politician proposing a move to a Saturday election day says the concept of voting wherever is more convenient would be better. Deputy Gollop said: "Our turnouts are low, they're more comparable with city centres. We need to do something to improve our turnout. And when you look at people who vote they do tend to be the older homeowners in the community. We're not doing enough for other sectors of the populous."

The election date is pencilled in for Wednesday 18th April 2012, but with a debate on shifting it to Saturday 21st April on the horizon, and more radical ideas now being thrown into the mix, the vote on how we vote should be an interesting one. (from CTV)

Make a difference .. not in my opinion...
