Two decades after the final episode of Dallas aired, a new series of the soap opera has been given the go-ahead.

For 13 years, Dallas drew global audiences as it charted the tumultuous lives of oil-rich family the Ewings on their Texas ranch.

The reboot will focus on a new generation of warring cousins but three of the original cast members are reprising their roles.

Larry Hagman returns as villain JR with actress Linda Gray by his side as wife Sue-Ellen.

Patrick Duffy is also back as JR's younger brother Bobby Ewing.

While the original series focused on the rivalry between the two siblings, this time around the family feud is between their sons.

Desperate Housewives' actor Jesse Metcalfe takes up the role of Christopher, the adopted son of Bobby.

He said his debut on show involves a "pretty risque sex scene".

His nemesis is JR's son, John Ross, played by 90210's Josh Henderson.

New generation: Metcalfe, Gonzalo, Henderson and Brewster

Much of the feud stems from their involvement with the same woman, Elena, played by The Fast And The Furious star Jordana Brewster.

To complicate matters, Christopher is already engaged to another woman, Rebecca, played by Julie Gonzalo.

Also starring in the series is Brenda Strong, who portrays Bobby's new wife, Ann.

The original series, which ran from 1978 to 1991, was famed for its dramatic cliffhangers and plot developments.

The Who shot JR storyline in 1980 remains one of the most watched programmes in television history.

It had a UK audience of 20 million while 300 million watched it worldwide.

Another infamous storyline was the death of Bobby Ewing. The character returned to the show, alive, two years later.

The writers attributed the intervening storylines to the dream of Bobby's then-wife Pam.

So far the new series has been commissioned for 10 episodes
