Time Team uncover Jersey secrets

Post by GD on Thu 24 Feb 2011, 8:20 pm

Ten months since Time Team's Tony Robinson and his archaeological team descended on Jersey, their secrets will be revealed in the popular programme when it airs this weekend.

Tony and his historical experts dug up sites at the War Tunnels and Mont Orgueil Castle.

So we went to investigate what the team discovered and what has happened since their findings.

In the woodland surrounding the war tunnels, the Time Team were looking for evidence of defences against allied attacks.

At Mont Orgueil they were looking for a lost castle, buried in time - and they found it.

Speaking last May, when the Time Team were carrying out their investigations, Tony said: "One of our goals was to see if we could find the earlier castle still buried as it was in the walls of the later one. What we can see nowadays is essentially a Tudor castle but if you look very closely there are little bits that appear to be much earlier."

The walls of that 13th Century castle have been left uncovered, unlike the team's trenches dug in the ground, because Jersey Heritage have decided to leave them on show to the public.

There will also be an exhibition at the entrance of the castle for the public to see what the team unearthed.

And at the tunnels there are also plans to feed what they have unearthed back to the public.

Olga Finch, from Jersey Heritage, said: "I think that's the wonderful thing about Time Team - they bring so many people here with so many resources and skills and I know it's three days but that's with everyone really focused. We don't have the ground scanning radar and the 3D imagery, so for us it was wonderful and we never really would have known what was happening here in the Castle Green without that technology."

You can catch Time Team on Sunday at 5.35pm on Channel Four.
