Jersey ministers could need support for propositions

Post by GD on Mon 10 Jan 2011, 7:53 pm

Ministers in Jersey may need seven signatures supporting their propositions before they are debated by States Members in future.

Deputy Geoff Southern claimed it would save wasting time preparing for debates that never happen.

He wants ministers to explain ideas and gain support before they are debated.

He said it was frustrating when politicians spend time and effort preparing to debate a proposal, only to find it being withdrawn.

The St Helier Deputy believes there is a growing feeling that some ministers' policies have a lack of co-ordination and direction.

He said that the need for signatures to support them would help correct this.

Deputy Southern said the move will mean politicians can use their time more effectively to the benefit of the people of Jersey. (from BBC)
