Blame supermarkets, not us for UK shop closures

Post by GD on Fri 10 Dec 2010, 4:43 pm

Yesterday's article in the Guardian's G2 supplement

GUERNSEY yesterday defended itself against a four-page attack on the island’s fulfillment sector by a national newspaper.
The Guardian accused the Channel Islands of closing hundreds of UK independent record shops by exploiting a VAT ‘loophole’.
But Commerce and Employment countered by revealing that specialist CD and DVD shops faced more competition from UK supermarkets than the tax-relief agreement between the Channel Islands and Britain.
The view was in stark contrast to claims in yesterday’s G2 section in the Guardian.
In a document entitled Setting The Record Straight, C&E addressed concerns about the operation of the island’s fulfilment and mail order industry (from GEP)

Eventually the UK Goverment will close the loophole and the companies will move elsewhere...

Absolute tosh, like most of the Guardian's output. Specialist record and DV shops were mostly killed off years ago by the likes Of Tesco etc invading their territory.

Agreed. I wouldn't use the Guardian to line my birdcage (if I had one). They are a mouthpiece for the new world order and they attack anyone that does not wish to be assimilated by the bullying EU and conforms to their 'standards'.
