Winter Wonderland put off by snow

A Winter Wonderland event in Guernsey has been postponed due to snow.

The annual charity fundraiser takes place at the home of the Bachmann family, who lend their garden every year to a festive lights display which raises around 10,000 in just one night.

The event was due to go ahead tonight (Wednesday), but the weather means it has had to be put off.

Organiser Clare Cairns of the Guernsey Fundraising Committee for Cancer Research UK said: "With the forecasts that are coming and the weather on Monday and having come up to the house here, with snow on the court, we just really felt that it was too dangerous for people."

The Winter Wonderland will now go ahead on Wednesday 8th December and is expected to attract 3000 islanders. An extra week gives organisers more time to work on the light displays, and with 40,000 bulbs to check there's plenty of work to do.

After fourteen years, the organisation of the Winter Wonderland is well practised and the appeal has not diminished according to Hedley Watson of the Lions Club:

"I think it sort of starts Christmas off, and so what we do see is we see the same people coming back year after year. We've got the Santa Grotto, which is very, very popular with the children and I think it's the beanjar and the bottle stall and the cake stall and the burgers, all these sorts of things and it just adds a great atmosphere."

Organisers are urging islanders to support the event despite the postponement to next week. Although they're hoping the snowy scenes will be a thing of the past by next Wednesday, they promise the Winter Wonderland will still be well worth a visit.

Half the money goes to Cancer Research, the rest is spent by the Lions Club who help needy families, children and elderly people in the island.
