New Lieutenant Governor announced

Jersey's new Lieutenant Governor will be Sir John McColl KCB, CBE, DSO. He will replace His Excellency Lieutenant-Governor General Andrew Ridgway as the Queen's representative on the island, in September next year.

He's served as a rifle company commander as part of the 2nd Battalion, he was posted to the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment in 1989 to command an armoured squadron and has held various military posts in Tyrone and Bosnia.

He currently serves as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR) and was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 2008 New Year Honours.

The position of Lieutenant Governor dates back to the 19th century and is primarily a diplomatic and ceremonial role.

The Lieutenant Governors of Jersey and Guernsey are the Queen's representatives to the respective islands, and acts as a link between the islands' governments and the UK.

The holder of the post also oversees States Debates but doesn't have a right to vote.

Is the role of the Lieutenant Governor outdated?
