Air Marshal Peter Walker speaking about his upcoming priorities.

Guernsey's next Lieutenant Governor has vowed to try to save the island's link with 201 squadron.

It was announced last week that "Guernsey's Own's" base at RAF Kinloss will close leaving the future of 201 in doubt.

Today (Tuesday) ex-RAF man Air Marshal Peter Walker was revealed as the new Lieutenant Governor who will take over from Sir Fabian Malbon in April.

He intends to do what he can to influence decision-makers to preserve Guernsey's link with the RAF if at all possible.

The role: The historic role of Governor dates back to the 18th century and is one of the island's main links to the UK.

The Lieutenant Governor is appointed by the Queen and serves as her representative in Guernsey. As the successor to the Dukes of Normandy, the Queen claims the allegiance of Sarnians.

Therefore, she appoints a Lieutenant Governor as her main channel of communication between the States of Guernsey and the UK Government.

Air Marshal Walker will not have any say in States debates but will be allowed to oversee them.

Background: Air Marshal Peter Walker CB, CBE served in the RAF for thirty-two years and currently lives in North Devon.

During his time in the RAF he served on several tours as a front-line pilot, flying Phantom FGR2 and Tornado F3 aircraft. His final post was Director of the Joint Warfare Centre in Norway, responsible for training NATO HG Staff for deployment to Afghanistan and the Balkans.

He left the Royal Air Force in 2007 and has since dedicated his time to voluntary work and civilian charities.

His interests include fly fishing, sailing and golf.
