The Little Theatre on the hills of St Peter Port to be sold

Post by GD on Mon 07 Jun 2010, 10:17 am

The building was demolished following a fire in 1984

In June 2010 the site of the Little Theatre on the hill below Clifton, in St Peter Port, went up for sale.
Most famous as home to plays, pantomimes and other performances the large building started life as a school associated with the Town Church.
After that it became known as the Central Hall and had many different uses before becoming the Little Theatre after the Occupation.
The building was demolished in 1984 following a fire, which left it unsafe.
The building was originally constructed in Victorian times and sat next to a house called Oban, which was also destroyed by the 1984 fire.
During the Occupation the hall became famous as the location of much entertainment by performers who had remained in the island and this tradition continued following the end of the Second World War.

By 2010 the cleared site had become overgrown

From the end of the war until the 1970s the Little Theatre became the home of GADOC who staged many productions there and helped with developing the building from the Central Hall into a more dedicated theatre space.
Before the fire, which brought an abrupt end to proceedings in the building, it became Renoir's Disco which opened the space up to a whole new audience following the construction of a new more modern theatre in St Peter Port at Beau Sejour. (from BBC)

So what do you remember about the theatre

Did you ever go there and what events/productions did you see?

Went to see Dame Edith Evans there and that was not quite my cup of tea. The next time I went was one night in 1983 when a young lad fell from the wall opposite the main door and the next time was when it was burning.

I recall a night club in the latter years before the fire, but cannot remember the name!

Renoir's was in the former theatre store, underneath the auditorium. Was also the Pool Hall for a few years.

I have truly GREAT memories of both the Little Theatre & Renoirs Disco (from 70's & 80's). I sincerely hope however, the potential buyer is restores both to their former glories! It's very sad to see present state!!
