Using plastic bin bags is illegal in Guernsey

Post by GD on Fri 19 Feb 2010, 3:12 pm

Investigations into a bag and tag rubbish scheme for Guernsey have discovered it is illegal to use plastic bags to dispose of rubbish.
The Parish Liaison Group stumbled across a law from 1964 that means it is illegal to use plastic bags to dispose of rubbish.
Dustbins or wax paper double-lined stitch seamed bags can be used instead.
Parochial Liaison Minister Hunter Adam said the issue would need to be sorted before any scheme can move forward.

The problem with plastic bags is that they are not strong enough

Hunter Adam

According to the Collection of Refuse Ordinance 1964 "plastic bags are not a lawful means of leaving out refuse for collection".
Deputy Adam said: "The problem with plastic bags is that they are not strong enough if you've got something sharp in them and to get one thick enough is unreasonable.
"They're not strong enough to protect against beaks from seagulls or rats and therefore they can tear them up."
Earlier this week the Senior Parish Constable for St Martin said they had put on hold a "pay as you throw" scheme due to a legal technicality over rubbish rates.
Deputy Adam said this discovery was another block to any such scheme, but moves were afoot to change the ordinances including more focus on the Environmental Health issues involved. (from BBC)

Whoops looks like we are all law breakers...lol

It took them long enough to find that out!brink back the bins ..makes the place much cleaner for all ..
see how much the police have lost in revenue over the year by not upholding this law.by the amount of black sacks that get put out each week they could have made a fortune

I can never understand picking up 'bio' doggie doos and putting them into a none bio sack and throwing them away......in years to come they are going to unearth all these sacks and find doggie doos in them and wonder what we were about!!!!

I'm waiting for the headline, the day after they sign the Suez contract.

Incineration found to be illegal! States to pay 1BN compensation to Suez.
