Once more unto the breach with Suez!

Post by GD on Tue 16 Feb 2010, 6:42 pm

Dear All

Suez Survey

Last time we conducted a survey on the subject it was prior to the debate where the States conferred Suez as the preferred bidder - done deal wasn't it? Not likely!! Amendments, Requetes, a lot of shouting, claims, counter claims rebuffs, letters and policies played out across the media and forums - there still appears to be life in the anti-Suez camp.

Anyone changed their mind?

Looks like his majesty has made a good decision and delayed the whole process(no bad thing)until we hear from Jersey. If they will take our rubbish for a few years we may yet get a sensible solution/s to our waste

An internet poll in Guernsey indicates support for the idea of scrapping the plan to build an incinerator.

Last year the States agreed to borrow 93m to construct an energy-from-waste plant at Longue Hougue.

But since then several politicians have been having second thoughts - especially as the option of exporting the island's waste to Jersey is back on the table for discussion.

Jersey is building a large incinerator at La Collette and it's due to start operating next year. But in the early years the Jersey plant will have far more capacity than the island needs. It has been built to cope with an anticipated large rise in rubbish disposal over the next 25 years as the population grows.

Now a poll in Guernsey by Submarine shows almost 60% of respondents in favour of halting plans for building a similar incinerator in Guernsey.

And a similar sized percentage want to change the island's waste strategy to include kerbside collection and more segregation.

States debates in both Jersey and Guernsey over the next few weeks should finally make it clear whether or not it would be in Guernsey's best interests to export its domestic waste to Jersey.
