Plans to tax polluters off the roads unveiled

Post by GD on Mon 12 Oct 2009, 6:28 pm

THOUSANDS of motorists face paying to help the island cut carbon emissions.
Environment is considering options to discourage car owners from buying and using high-emission vehicles. Taxing those with these types of vehicle is a way of achieving that objective, it said.
The department has released a consultation document but stressed it was not yet putting forward any firm proposals.
It suggested some ‘hypothetical’ policy examples including a green tax on fuel at 50p per litre – making fuel around £1.34 a litre or more than £6 a gallon – or introducing a flat registration fee of £2,000 for any vehicle with CO2 emissions above 120g/km.
Environment deputy minister Jenny Tasker said it was important that people looked at the document and commented.
‘We are looking to receive responses from a wide variety of individuals and organisations, whether commercial, charitable or otherwise,’ she said.
‘It is important that we hear from as many sources as possible because this is a matter that may impact upon the lives of all islanders. Government must always consider carefully before imposing new or additional taxes and the responses to this consultation paper will assist the States in making the right decisions.’
Environment was required to investigate the introduction of a sliding emissions tax after the States noted the Policy Council’s Energy Policy paper in 2008.
It was also asked to investigate the possibility of a subsidy for zero-emission vehicles.
The department said it had examined schemes in other European jurisdictions and noted consultation undertaken in Jersey. (from thisisguernsey)

Just another tax to get money out of the locals...

Well Jenny Tasker did say 'Private' drivers - not those incredibly smelly buses!!!

Now I suggest (living at St Sampsons) that we start with the Electriciy Company's large chimneys ..... and stop super yachts coming here for fuel!!! that's just for starters....let me ride a bit!

This has got nothing to do with cutting carbon emissions and everything to do with yet another money making exercise by the states.

Is it proposed that the £2k charge would be on existing vehicles or just new ones?

If it's just new ones then it's fair enough surely, there's a choice element as to who pays it.

As for the 50p per litre rise, I'm all in favour of it. It should hopefully encourage people to walk/cycle/get the bus rather than unconsciously jumping in their cars every time they have to move more than 10 yards.

I'm sure Technophobe will come up with something for you Gimp!!! :-) and just think we could have less cars and more huge smelly buses....deep joy!!!!! - and 1 good way to stop emmisions would be to stop our 'Powers That Be' expelling a load of hot air!!!

i think after reading the rag today its for new / 1st reg. not on existing vehicles.

as for 50p a ltr, hardly make any diffirence on the peeps that drive to town, park 10 hours and drive home.

who are they trying to get out of their cars and use the bus ?

peeps that just drive to town and back home or tradesmen and delivery drivers FFS

I wouldn't mind so much if all the money gathered actually went towards schemes with the environment in mind but . . . . . . . I don't think it would!
If the States are that bothered with Carbon footprint why do they insist on flying all over the World at the drop of a hat??I wonder how big Mr Trotts Carbon shoes are?

What are they going to do when it's finally (not too far away) declared that the whole global warming thing was a scam? Give back all the green taxes to the taxpayer? Some crank of a British Lord is even advocating that people stop eating meat because of the greenhouse gases emitted by cattle. So, let's see, green taxes on motor fuel, electricity, garbage disposal, dog tax (they emit more than a SUV according to a report), meat....not to mention health tax on anything considered dangerous...soda, fast food, dairy products.....the list goes on. Anyway, Lord Whatever-his-name-is can suck on his carrot, I'm going for a steak!

Please explain how it is a scam?

It has to be said though that i dislike the way these duty rises are called 'green'. They are just revenue raisers because they are only ever mentioned when there's some discussion about how to fund things. So therefore they're not green taxes but essential parts of infrastructure funding.

So any green tax on fuel should be taken straight from the extraction revenue, the more they extract the more punitive the tax. Less profitable to drill for oil, less oil consumption. That way the duty rises would have to be debated more honestly.

The meat industry is something else again. It needs slaughtering.
