''Loo''sing out to vandalism

Post by GD on Tue 19 May 2009, 10:50 am

Public toilets 24-7 could soon be a thing of the past in Guernsey.

Over the last three years vandals have forced Treasury and Resources to spend more than 70,000 on carrying out repairs.

In the latest incident 3,000 worth of damage was done to the toilets on the Crown Pier.

Now the department say they may be forced to lock the toilets at night and maybe even at weekends.

I find it hard to believe that no-one saw anything, they probably did, but thought, I can't be bothered

Typical attitude of today's society...

I feel that it is unlikely, that in such a small community, the 'authorities' are not entirely unaware of those who are responsible for much of the anti-social behaviour and vandalism in the Island.

But in our modern 'liberated' society what is the point of apprehending them when the burden of prooving in court is almost insumountable, and even if sucessful attracts trivial and ineffective punishments.

They should invent a toilet, wash hand basins etc tha if it gets brocken an alarm goes off and locks you in.

Or cameras at the wash hand basins and entrances so the latest users can be identified.

I know privacy is important but having no loos to use is worse, surely breaking a loo causes a soundwave that is not normal in a loo so an alarm activated by a crashing sound should be simple to set up.

Easy to say about the cameras, but they can only show people going in and out. The cameras can only help. if five people go in and one toilet is broken, who did it ? also we must consider their human rights and there must also be a health and safety issue here, what if they cut their pinkie on the damaged toilet. The damage seems to have increased since the monument was closed and the youngsters congregated on the crown pier. Saying that it's used by people of all ages and at all times of day and night, so who can tell who's responsible.

Other places in the UK or Europe must have got over this issue, surely?

How about stainless steel toilets, urinals and sinks? Expensive to install granted, but surely they would be (virtually) vandal proof? I don't know, what do others think?

I agree with Dell, in Austria and Germany the public toilets are always very clean and in good condition and definitely not vandalised, Why?

.........yes and in Switzerland you could have a meal in them - they are pristine!!!!

I think the stainless steel idea is great it is used in many places (even in France) and must drive the 'wannabe' vandals loopy as Dell says they are virtually vandal proof - and the cost would soon be recouped.......................
