Guernsey's States elect new Policy Council

Guernsey's States has elected its new policy council.

Despite the Chief Minister announcing his choices last week, it didn't all go to plan for him. But he's confident the new team can work together.

For the States members arriving at the Chamber this morning there was only one certainty for the top bench - the elected Chief Minister Deputy Lyndon Trott.

He'd said who he wanted sitting beside him on the Policy Council - but it wasn't all going to go his way...

The first role up was Commerce and Employment. Deputy Trott wanted Deputy Jack Honeybill but it was the previous deputy minister of the department who took the position - Deputy Carla McNulty Bauer.

At the Home Department Deputy Geoff Mahy received the House's endorsement when he was re-elected unopposed. Deputy Dave Jones will stay at Housing after his decisive win over Deputy Rhoderick Matthews.

Deputy Bernard Flouquet may not have been too successful last week but today certainly went better for him. The Chief Minister wanted him at Public Services and he saw off a challenge from Deputy Al Brouard to get there. He'll also be Deputy Trott's right hand man as he got voted in as Deputy Chief Minister.

Deputy Peter Sirrett remains on the Policy Council but at Environment rather than Culture & Leisure. The incumbent for the past year Deputy David De Lisle wanted to stay in the job but lost out to Deputy Sirrett by just one vote.

Deputy Sirrett's old position at Culture & Leisure also saw a change from Deputy Trott's wishlist. The Chief Minister nominated Deputy Leon Gallienne but Deputy Mike O'Hara beat both him and Deputy John Gollop at the first ballot.

After that, the voting went surprisingly smoothly. Deputy Hunter Adam will bring his expertise to the Health Department having been elected unopposed. Deputy Carol Steere's return to the House sees her step straight in to Education, despite Deputy De Lisle's attempt at that.

While Deputy Mary Lowe wanted to return to Social Security she lost out to the Chief Minister's choice of Deputy Mark Dorey. They left arguably the most important job to last. But there was never going to be a serious challenger to Deputy Charles Parkinson at Treasury and he took his seat on the top bench unopposed.

The fact that Deputy Trott and Deputy Parkinson haven't seen eye to eye in the past is no secret. But this is a new States and a new Policy Council and Deputy Trott is determined his team can work together.

Full list...

Commerce and Employment - Deputy Carla McNulty Bauer

Housing - Deputy Dave Jones

Environment - Deputy Peter Sirrett

Well at least he didn't get all his way....
