Gollop to stand for Culture and Leisure

Post by GD on Fri 02 May 2008, 10:26 pm

The first challenger has emerged to Deputy Lyndon Trott's wishlist of ministers. The new Chief Minister has announced the Policy Council he would like to see elected. But the decision on whether to follow his ideas will be made by the States on Tuesday. Deputy John Gollop, who's not on the list, has announced he'll be seeking the position of Culture and Leisure Minister.

Deputy Gollop topped the poll in his district of St Peter Port North. He told Channel Online:

"I feel the public of Guernsey on balance expect me to take on a leadership role in the new house. I was offered the chance to stand for a Committee Chairmanship but feel my eleven years of experience, high profile, consistent popularity with a proportion of the public and my years of working on ten States of Guernsey departments show that I am a hard working team player who deserves a role on the senior committee at Policy Council level."

Deputy Gollop says he will only be standing for the Culture and Leisure role at the States elections on Tuesday. (from Channel online)

I hope he gets the job...

Yep just thinking that myself Pete i think John would do a good job , the thing i like about John is that he gets involved with all things and is very approachable and willing to listen to the other side of the argument. As for Leon well i will say no more.

Hi everyone just started on this new site. Seems much better than Why Guernsey which seems to be dying on its feet these days, nasty little comments towards sitting politicians and all that. funny how the most outspoken individuals on there and the most nastiest seem to be off the site, perhaps the election has taken its toll on them.
Can I join the throng on here.
I agree that John may be good for Culture and leisure what concerns me is he really concerned about heritage which obviously comes under the banner of Culture. He has remained fairly quiet on these issues over the last few years, concentrating only on living streets (steps).
Perhaps Mike O Hara? Although that would be a kick in th teeth as I think John must be spitting nails, he obviously believes that he has done his time as a back bencher and wants to get in to the cut and thrust of policy making.

I agree Sandra, but JG does need to smarten himself up. He is a very capable man in some areas and relies on the 'likeability' factor which saw him top the pole in St PPN but he will lose this large support of voters if he becomes like some of the others in his attitude. We in Gsy must stop voting for someone who we like because it’s come back and bitten on us the ass so many many times. Equally, just because someone is an ‘old Elizabethan’ it does not make then a good Deputy or give them the god given right to run our island.

Its what comes out of his mouth that counts Pete not what's on his back.
If John feels he would do a good job at C & L I think he should be given the chance
