Electoral roll cock-up

Post by GD on Tue 08 Apr 2008, 12:39 pm

Changes in Guernsey law are needed to stop islanders missing out on a vote
because of a government cock-up.

That's according to the Home Department's Chief Officer Brian Ritchings.

Around 10 islanders won't have a say in choosing our next States despite
registering for the electoral roll on-line.

The department's put the mistake down to staff changes and human error.

At the moment there's no way to legally add anyone to the electoral roll
after the official closing date.

Mr Ritchings says an investigation's underway and they'll make
recommendations of the back of that.

He thinks one of those will be a legal fail-safe to stop this kind of mistake
happening again.
