Just 1.8% turn out to elect Town douzenier
ST PETER PORT has a new douzenier.
Dr Hannah Laidlow beat the only other candidate, Keith Pike, to win yesterday’s by-election.
The election was the result of former deputy Brian Gabriel moving out of the parish after 14 years on the douzaine.
Voting took place at the constables’ office from 10am to 8pm, but turnout was low.
‘There was just a 1.8% turnout, which was very poor and very disappointing'

Hope there will be a better turn out in November when at least 4 douzeniers will come to the end of their time!

They will be lucky if they can get 4 candidates standing, never mind enough for an election.

Kat, I agree however, I must be honest I or the wife did not vote because we really did not know the two candidates even though we are sure they were both admirable candidates. Spirit, I share your concerns and without sounding racist I hope the next election in Nov yields more local candidates, my fear is that we are going down the road of (especially in STPP) that none locals will be running this parish and then God help us. In my opinion the post of douzenier is a post one can hold with pride and remember that they were voted in by the public to represent all of this parishes peoples and not for their mates or big banks. The face of STPP is changing and not for the better and what little power a douzenier does have must be used both wisely and sensibly because it is the town’s future which is at stake here.

good point Peter .my term of office is up this year ,so i will be standing once again and hopfully returning to my seat. and the others who are with me are local folks as well!
Even if folks went to their parish meeting it would help as it it these meeting that give us the guide line on what the parishoniers want from us
if they ignore the meeting then how do we know what they want!
