States debates voting rule change

Post by GD on Wed 11 Jun 2008, 3:07 pm

Jersey States members are debating new rules to scrap the need to register to vote every three years.
The assembly is meeting in a continuation of a previous session.
Last week the States ran out of time to discuss changes to election law and school milk funding so members agreed to Tuesday's special sitting.
The Privileges and Procedures Committee (PPC) is suggesting the States creates a rolling register so people will only need to register to vote once.
Members will also be debating changing the opening hours for polling stations from 0800 to 1000 GMT.
And the PPC wants to make it illegal for States members to help people fill in postal votes to avoid any potential interference in the election process.
That is being contested by Deputy Geoff Southern, who says helping parishioners vote through the post is just old-fashioned electioneering.
He is proposing extending the funding for school milk, which is being opposed by the Council of Ministers. ( from BBC News)

Sounds like it could be interesting...
