Liberation: No day off for Jersey

Post by GD on Tue 02 Feb 2010, 7:22 pm

Jersey's States have voted against giving islanders an extra bank holiday on May 10th.

Liberation Day falls on a Sunday this year, so an extra day off isn't automatically given.

However in Guernsey islanders will be able to enjoy the holiday - politicians have already decided to give them the day off.

mmm sad that the Jersey States Members cannot see the importance of the day...

Hold on, the importance of the day is still the same whether it falls on a weekend or on a weekday. Whether you get an extra day off has nothing to do with the importance of the day, for a Guern, May 9th is still May 9th no matter what day it is on. You are given a day off if it falls on a weekday so you can celebrate rather than go to work. If it falls on a weekend do you stop celebrating and wait till Monday? I think not. Perhaps Jsy states are correct ansd Gsy states are out of line, even though I am more than happy to accept a day off on the Monday.

Jersey Deputy Montfort Tadier is battling to get islanders an extra day off to mark the 65th anniversary of the Liberation.

Because May 9th falls on a Sunday it had been planned to do the same as Guernsey and give everyone the Monday off. But the States rejected the idea.

It's prompted an angry public backlash. Now the deputy is going to suggest giving everyone Friday 7th May off instead.
