'Mined where you walk' - Sark Occupation book
As Liberation Day celebrations bring back wartime memories Sark has a permanent reminder of its experiences.
A new book, "Mined Where You Walk" is a Jersey author's attempt to paint a complete picture of what happened in the island.
Richard Le Tissier may live in Jersey, but he says his heart lies in Sark. He spent a lot of time on the island just after the war, falling in love with the place and its people. Fascinated by its wartime Occupation history, he felt the books that had been written on the subject weren't complete. He wanted to tell the whole story of what happened. So he set out to speak to everyone he could find that had lived through the period.
Richard believes his book has been thoroughly researched. He was given access to the Seigneurie's archives as well as the Greffier's office and many personal records of those living on the island.
He hopes that current residents and tourists will enjoy it now - and that future generations will be able to learn from those who will no longer be there to tell their stories in person. Launching "Mined Where You Walk" on Sark's Liberation Day, the 10th of May, seemed both an appropriate beginning for the book and a fitting completion date for his longheld ambition. (CI Online)
