Tragedy for house fire family
A three-year-old girl caught in a fire which left her mother fighting for her life has died.
The youngster has not been named because her mother is still unconscious and unaware of the tragedy.
Firefighters say it was a simple electrical fault in the airing cupboard which started the fire as mother and daughter slept - unaware that smoke was filling their home.
When they were pulled from the blaze yesterday morning the toddler had been due to fly to Southampton for specialist treatment. But when she couldn't be stabilised the decision had to be made to switch off her life support machine.
The girl's unconscious mother is still unaware of what has happened. Her critical condition means she can't be told.
The man who tried to save them is recovering from smoke inhalation, he was found by paramedics on the doorstep.
Today, the street at Mont Cochon is quiet after yesterday morning's tragedy. Neighbours are still in a state of shock after the news that the three-year-old who they described as a lovely little girl.
Jersey Fire and Rescue Service have offered their condolences to the family and all those involved in the incident.
The three-year-old's death is the first fire-related death in Jersey in more than two years and firefighters are keen to keep the community safe. Fire officers visited around 30 homes and fitted 14 smoke alarms yesterday.
Marc Le Cornu from Jersey Fire and Rescue Service told Channel Online: "It's reassurance for the community really. Everybody will have questions about what's happened, why it's happened, how are the people. It's very difficult to get information when you are not a family member so we do that to reassure the local community and get them up to speed with where these people are, what's happened and why the fire started."
Community Safety Officers are keen to let islanders know that if they want to have a fire alarm fitted or have a home safety check, they can phone 445906 or request a visit on line at www.fire.gov.je (from CIonline)
Its so sad, but did you see the CI Tv news, the woman they interviewed had removed the batteries from her smoke alarms...
