The Channel Islands is a hideout for fraudsters

Post by GD on Tue 20 May 2008, 10:32 pm

"A senior politician in Guernsey is to ask a national newspaper to justify its description of the Channel islands as "a popular hideout for fraudsters".

The comment was made in a Sunday Times feature about online auctions.

A section "How to avoid online cowboys" said people should be aware of sellers from "strange locations", and named the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

Commerce and Employment Minister Carla McNulty Bauer said the department would ask for evidence to support the claims.

A spokesman for the Isle of Man Government told BBC News he would be very interested to know what evidence the newspaper had to make its "sweeping" statement.

Meanwhile, a States of Jersey spokesperson described the article's author as "cheeky" for citing the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands "with no evidence whatsoever".
