Musket found off Alderney.

More artifacts have been lifted from the wreck of an Elizabethan ship off the Channel Islands.
Marine archaeologists recovered a musket, helmet and some navigational
equipment from the vessell, which went down off Alderney in 1592. It was carrying a military cargo when it sank and was discovered by a fisherman in 1977.
It is hoped to raise the first of two cannons on Thursday. These will be put on display in the Tower of London.

Spanish war
Other artefacts recovered by divers include a breast plate and powder cask.
The operation to salvage the wreck's military cargo, has been organised by Alderney Maritime Trust.
It is believed the ship was wrecked during England's war with Spain
under Philip II, that followed the defeat of the Spanish Armada in
1588.

The ship wreck was discovered by a local crab fisherman in 1977

ARCHAEOLOGIST Mensun Bound is adamant that a 16th-century cannon raised from Alderney’s Elizabethan wreck is full of surprises.
Oxford lecturer Mr Bound directed the cannon’s raising in the waters
off Corblets Bay on Thursday afternoon and has since spoken of his joy,
relief and excitement.
Mr Bound said: ‘It was a testing day. Poor conditions prevented us
from diving in the morning and it was touch and go as to whether we
would go for it in the afternoon.
‘Thankfully, everything came together at just the right time. The
weather improved dramatically and the harbour master gave us the green
light. The divers then did a superb job and we ended up bringing a
magnificent example of 16th-century warfare to the surface.’
