What's in a name?
Islanders may soon be able to choose their baby's surname - whether they are married or not.
At the moment children with married parents have to take the father's name.
Unmarried couples have to give their child the mother's maiden name.
But if the States agree couples will have the choice of either surnames or a combination of the two.
Home Affairs say changing the law is of social importance.
They have had several queries from islanders who want to register their child under a certian name but legally can't.
About time this law was brought up to date..
