No Policing Bill For Guernsey Live

Post by GD on Tue 15 Apr 2008, 2:26 pm

The Guernsey Live festival is approaching fast and the island's police is confident it has every resource to handle it.

Unlike Jersey Live, it looks as if the organisers won't be billed for any of the policing at the event.

It's a great relief for those behind the festival, who are already shipping in 90 specialist security staff to allow the event to run smoothly.

In just over two weeks time Victoria Field in Guernsey will become home of Guernsey Live. Thousands of music fans will fill the field, and with those fans comes the responsibility for proper policing and security. The organisers have arranged for more than ninety specialist security staff, with experience from UK festivals from Glastonbury to Reading, to be here.

Guernsey police however are quite happy they've got more than enough staff for the job on the day. That's quite different to Jersey who actually want to charge the organisers for policing Jersey Live and bringing in external police officers.

Jersey Live organisers are still waiting for their final bill from Jersey police for the extra help, but in Guernsey, the policing outlook is quite different.

Chief Inspector Ruari Hardy said:
"It is a music event and people are going we hope to enjoy a day of bands and music. There may be small issues for us to deal with, but I feel confident with the organisation of the event and the way that Guernsey police are responding to ensure that if there are any difficulties we can deal with them."

It wasn't so long ago that there was talk of condensing both festivals into one and basing it in Guernsey, purely because of the policing expense in the larger island. Guernsey police are confident they'll be able to manage with existing staff, but are keen to point out the security team should in no way be seen as a substitute for officers.

Chief Inspector Ruari Hardy:
"The police obviously will deal with matters that we have to deal with and we won't shy away from confronting issues of public order and obviously crime or any other issues we have to deal with. The security staff have a responsibility to the organisers and they have a significant experience of this type of event in the UK. The security staff they're bringing in are off island staff and we're confident that the roles that have been set out for them to fulfil will be done properly."

On the 3rd and 4th of May, police and security guards will have a very clear presence at Victoria Field and every measure is being taken to ensure the festival passes without any major incident.

Chief Inspector Ruari Hardy:
"We are working closely with the organisers and when the event runs I'm sure it'll be a success."(from Channel TV)

You telling me that our local force are not going to incur extra cost's for the event,

I would like to know just how much it extra going to cost the "Tax Payer" for the event

I think this is the right decision, given the fact this event has never been on before. Let's see how it goes for this year, and guage it for next. (assuming it happens again)
One could argue the Liberation Funfair costing extra to police, but i really do think we should give Guernsey Live a chance. Happy 2
