Guernsey's population controls under review

In 2005 the States decided to postpone the census for five years

New measures are being considered to keep Guernsey's population at about 60,000.
The States has been working on the issue since agreeing to the cap on the number of people in 2007.
Natasha Keys, population policy group director, said they were looking beyond the housing control laws, which were not designed to tackle the issue.
Guernsey's last census was in 2001, but a States estimate in 2008 put the population at 61,700.
Ms Keys said: "The Policy Council is working on developing a completely new regime that will allow us to properly manage our population levels.
"This is a regime that's got to try to balance the many competing demands we have on the island and to make sure that in doing that we protect Guernsey's unique character, allowing us to maintain our fantastic environment whilst at the same time allowing Guernsey's economy to continue to be successful."
The census held on 29 April 2001 found the population of Guernsey, including the islands of Herm and Jethou, was 59,807.
The next census had been due in 2006, but in April 2005 the States decided for budgetary reasons to delay it until 2011.

cannot see how they will manage to keep the population down... especially with so many non-locals managing to stay in the Island..
