Black sack refuse charge proposed
Residents in a Guernsey parish could be charged for each black sack of rubbish they leave out for collection.
The douzaine of St Martin's, Mike Torode, said the scheme could encourage more recycling in the parish.
The black bags would be sold by the douzaine, with parishioners paying for the bags they disposed of, rather than paying a flat charge.
People who wanted to save money by using fewer bags could either create less waste, or recycling more.
The scheme has been proposed as an alternative to kerbside recycling.
I wonder how they will control State Houses?

Just do what half of St Martin's residents do already and drop the rubbish on the St Peter Port piles on the way to work.

This works in other countries. Council supply bags via retailers at a cost and you only pay for the rubbish you get rid of. Does encourage recycling which incidently should be tied in by way of kerb side collections on the same day as the rubbish is taken. Certainly makes you more responsible about the rubbish you are disposing.

would you do more if there was a doorstep collection? You're not the only one that says this. I reckon kerbside would encourage far more people to do a cursory sort before black bagging things.

Re: Black sack refuse charge proposed
I try to imagine on our small pavements what the island would look like if we had piles of stuff outside our houses for collection....the pavements are hardly wide enough for two people to pass each other - especially if the are in a wheelchair or pushing a pram - in Australia where this is done on a regular basis there is enough room - every town house has a nature strip in front of there house which does not block the pavement and the people leave the stuff on these (it still does not look very nice even in a large country) .... I am happy to do my bit for my kids and grandchildren (not the powers that be) I would hate to leave them with the legacy of a huge 10 storey building on the piece of land that people arriving by boat see first.....Jersey's is ugly enough and now needs replacing (mind you I suppose if it's not in your back yard i.e. St Sampsons or don't use the ferry service it won't bother you or yours - so indeed no need to recycle to try and keep our island beautiful)

The idea of charging for the refuse sacks is to perhaps encourage schooly to separate waste from recyclable stuff. As to the amount out on the pavement, well schooly puts her 4 bags out anyway, like most people, so the amount on the pavement shouldn't change too much it will just be in different bags..

You don't have to separate your stuff, your choice, but you would have to buy bags to put your stuff into, and they get expensive. ASfter a time you may decide to get the bug or jump on the bandwagon to save yourself 2-3 quid a week.

Then we should introduce fines as in Germany. Wrong stuff in the wrong bag - get a ticket.

I thought it was mainly about saving our Island for future generations - not saving money .... but perhaps I got it all wrong.....

no Karma, you are right, but people need to be told the benefits in monetary terms because thinking about the future is for ecoterrorists and mentalists.
