Deputies’ elections: At least 61 stand

Post by GD on Tue Nov 04, 2008 8:11 pm

AT LEAST 61 candidates will start their campaigns tonight to win one of 29 seats on offer in the Deputies’ elections.
Over the last 24 hours almost a dozen hopefuls, including several of those who failed in the Senatorial elections, have announced that they will stand for a three-year term as Deputy. And tonight, as all eyes turn to the United States as millions of Americans cast their vote for Barack Obama or John McCain, even more candidates are likely to announce that they will stand in the elections closer to home.
By tomorrow, the Island’s lampposts and roundabouts will once again become battlegrounds for candidates fighting for advertising space for their campaign, ahead of the elections on Wednesday 26 November.
Even before the campaigning has begun, St Peter Deputy Collin Egré has made an allegation of a smear campaign against him. Tonight’s meetings, at which candidates will be formally nominated by a friend or associate, will be held at parish halls and the Town Hall at varying times from 7.30 pm. (from thisisjersey)
