School nativity photos are legal

THERE is nothing in the Data Protection Law that stops parents taking photographs or video footage of school nativities, according to the commissioner.

In the past, schools have stopped parents taking pictures of performances citing the Data Protection Law. But the Data Protection office has issued a public statement to try to prevent confusion on the law as the schools head into the Christmas season and nativity performances.

The police say they fully support the advice issued by the Data Protection Office, but have added that they will provide advice and support in cases where parents become suspicious of people taking photographs and video footage without good reason.

Data Protection Commissioner Emma Martins says that as long as the pictures are for ‘domestic’ use, they are not prevented by the law. She said: ‘The Data Protection Law is unlikely to apply in many cases where photographs or images are taken in schools and other educational or childcare institutions.’ (from Thisisjersey)

good! ...boy o boy... if parents can't come to a nativity and take pictures what on earth can they do for their children... things are SO over the top these days!
